They were like tv's now days everyone had one, they gave the news just like television without the images, just the verbiage. For example, during world war 2, FDR (Franklin d. Roosevelt ) had sit-downs known as fireside chats were he would address the American people on the radio about details of the war, he used these talks to keep up the support of the American people and give them some insight to what was going on.
