How did the reality of combat in World War I compare to the beliefs and attitudes many Europeans had about war before fighting b
gizmo_the_mogwai [7]

Answer:

Perhaps the most extraordinary thing about the modern battlefield is the desolation and emptiness of it all. . . . Nothing is to be seen of war or soldiers—only the split and shattered trees and the burst of an occasional shell reveal anything of the truth. One can look for miles and see no human being. But in those miles of country lurk (like moles or rats, it seems) thousands, even hundreds of thousands of men, planning against each other perpetually some new device of death. Never showing themselves, they launch at each other bullet, bomb, aerial torpedo, and shell. And somewhere too . . . are the little cylinders of gas, waiting only for the moment to spit forth their nauseous and destroying fumes. And yet the landscape shows nothing of all this—nothing but a few shattered trees and 3 or 4 thin lines of earth and sandbags; these and the ruins of towns and villages are the only signs of war anywhere.

The glamour of red coats—the martial tunes of fife and drum—aide-de-camps scurrying hither and thither on splendid chargers—lances glittering and swords flashing—how different the old wars must have been. The thrill of battle comes now only once or twice in a [year]. We need not so much the gallantry of our fathers; we need (and in our Army at any rate I think you will find it) that indomitable and patient determination which has saved England over and over again

How and why did the economies and social norms of the North and South steadily diverge over the course of the first half of the
creativ13 [48]

Answer:

Climate, Mexican-American War, King Cotton, War of 1812

Explanation:

During this period we begin to see how the North becomes more industrialized and the South heavily relies on an agricultural lifestyle. The South had very good climate and great soil for the growth of cash crops such as tobacco and cotton. However, with the earlier invention of the cotton gin in the very late 18th century, and the large amount of free labor, exploited from slaves, the South was able to form a Cotton Kingdom to the point where they exported nearly 2/3rds of the worlds cotton. The Mexican American War would also add new lands, such as modern day Texas, providing even more new land and resources to keep this agricultural life. Slaves would be critical to this new lifestyle, being the core in Southern norm and culture. As for the North, they didn't have the proper grounds for cash crops, and would soon begin to industrialize, building factories and roads that would allow them to transport goods and lead to a massive industrial boom. Strangely enough, the large amounts of cotton being produced would help with this boom, since it would be used in textile mills. However, the North would begin to drift away from slavery, and would see a wave of immigrants (like the Irish) come in to provide labor. After the War of 1812, the South would see an increase in cotton productions, and the North in textile mills, built on rivers to be water powered. With help of unskilled workers, the mills and factories allowed for mass production, which in turn would promote consumerism.

This a general idea, but more can be said still.

Excerpt from Lose Weight Fast and Easy
Tomtit [17]

Answer:

The correct answer is C) No evidence is presented to support the argument.

Explanation:

The advertisement is for a 'miracle' drug that can help people loose weight very quickly. The kind of language used in this advertisement is more for 'shock and attraction' than anything else.

The aim is to quickly grab the attention of people who might buy it. HOWEVER, the advertisements failed to provide any credible evidence or research into how it works and if has been endorsed by a medical professional.

The sentence ''Researchers have declared this fast-acting'' is misleading and does not provide any proof of a professional medical body, backing this pill.
