He would be both due to the fact, when he arrived in America and he was the first to arrive on the New World. Although he disliked the Natives there, forced them to give their riches and parts of their land. So to many Natives he's viewed as a villain, but to other people he was viewed as a hero and because he completed 4 voyages across the Atlantic
