Abraham Lincoln wanted to avoid controversy about slavery even though he wanted to abolish it. He said he wouldn't change anything about slavery so that he would get supporters. After he was elected President of the United States he kept that promise until the Civil War started and he had to make it about slavery so that people would see why he was using so much energy and money on a war.
