Archaea and the History of Life on Earth This activity will help you meet these educational goals: You will communicate scientif

ic ideas about the phenomena of a process or system using multiple formats, including text. You will apply scientific reasoning to determine if available data and evidence support a given claim. You will write routinely over short or long periods of time on a variety of topics and for a range of audiences. Directions Read the instructions for this self-checked activity. Type in your response to each question, and check your answers. At the end of the activity, write a brief evaluation of your work. Activity All life is made of cells, but all cells also have a shared history. Watch the video “Archaea and How DNA Began,” and answer the questions that follow. Part A Using evidence from the video, describe three characteristics of life that Archaea bacteria have. Font Sizes Characters used: 0 / 15000 Part B What similarities and differences do you see between the bacteria and the human cells shown in the video? Are these cells prokaryotes or eukaryotes? Font Sizes Characters used: 0 / 15000 Part C Given the living conditions of Archaea, what mechanisms do you think they have to regulate homeostasis? Font Sizes Characters used: 0 / 15000

Answer:

Edmentum's sample answers

Explanation:

- Part A: The picture of Archaea bacteria in the video showed that the organism was made of a single cell, and it had a defined border. Scientists also know that it reproduces by passing on its genetic information because there is evidence of Archaea’s genes in our DNA today.

- Part B: Both cells had a clearly defined border. However, the bacterial cells were rod-shaped, and the human cells were round. The human cells had a clearly defined nucleus and other structures within the cell. The bacteria had a darkened place in the center, but it was not a clearly defined nucleus. Also, the bacteria are single-celled organisms, while humans have many cells. The bacteria are prokaryotes, and the human cells are eukaryotes.

- Part C: They live in extremely hot environments. So, they would need to have some mechanism to control their internal body temperatures.

- Part D : Do you think the gene EEF1 ALPHA1 supports cell theory? Explain your response

The gene EEF1 ALPHA1 supports cell theory. Cell theory states that all living things are made from cells. Since all living things share this gene that dates back to an organism that lived billions of years ago, it makes sense to conclude that all living things originated from the earliest forms of life. This conclusion would explain why all living things on Earth are made of cells.
