The Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804 was the most successful of all slave uprisings in the Western Hemisphere and resulted in the establishment of Haiti as the first free black republic. At the time of the revolution, Haiti was a French colony and was called Saint-Domingue.

Through the revolution, Africans and people of African descent freed themselves from French colonization and slavery. Although hundreds of slave rebellions took place during the slave era, only the revolution in Saint-Domingue in 1791 was successful enough to completely liberate an entire island.
