The correct answer is D.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba remained a communist country but entered in an extended period of economic crisis called Special Period in Time of Peace.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union had a devastating effect on Cuba's economy. The country lost about 80% of its import and the GDP dropped by 34%.

Cuba remained the only Marxist nation within the Western Hemisphere and had to find new trading partners, mostly in Latin America.

Despite all this, communism in Cuba was not abandoned and continued as the only allowed and carried out political system.
