Giving in to this political pressure, inexperienced Union Army troops under the command of Brigadier General Irvin McDowell advanced through Bull Run (Occoquan River) against the equally immature Confederate Army under the command of Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard near Manassas Junction.
