For more than one hundred years, two ideas have been at war with each other in Colombia. One idea, held by the powerful rich, was that Colombia needed a ruling class. The other idea, believed by most others in the country, was that laws and working conditions must be changed for the sake of the general good. The parties holding these opposing opinions have had many serious battles because the poor far outnumber the rich.
