The correct answer is B) Lincoln had spoken against the Mexican-American War.

Lincoln was unable to get a position in President Zachary Taylor's administration because "Lincoln had spoken against the Mexican-American War."

As a Republican congressman, Abraham Lincoln criticized the Mexican-American War. He considered that the war was not necessary but he was careful to not critique the courage and determination of the United States troops. Lincoln had been elected Congressman to represent Springfield, Illinois in 1846.

The other options of the question were A) Lincoln was a charter member of the opposing Whig Party. C) Taylor only wanted people living in the Southern States. D) The only position open was in the Oregon Territory.

Why did southern states want slaves to be counted as representation?
Irina-Kira [14]
State Representation is based off the population of the state, since slaves weren't technically citizens, they were not counted in deciding how many representatives a state had. Slaves were a large majority of the population in the south. The south thought they were under represented and wanted slaves to be counted so representation was fair in their eyes.
