The pilgrims thought that they would be successful because there was a sprawling forest waiting for them with the promise of no other people and a chance to start a new life with the settlers they had on the ship. They also thought they would be successful because some natural growing crops were there. Their thoughts were fulfilled except for one issue there were people there this was later found to not be as big of an issue as they thought because they traded for food and hunting supplies.
