Henry David Thoreau's Civil Disobedience (1849) was an important manifesto on the rights of citizens to resist unjust laws. Thoreau was opposed to the payment of taxes, the Mexican American War and slavery. He promoted peaceful resistance to political power. This would become a hallmark of the American civil rights and protest movements.
