In Florida, there are large urban areas like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, and tourism is one of the biggest economic drivers. In North Carolina, there are many urban areas like Raleigh and Charlotte, as well as many research centers. In New England, there are many urban areas as well, like Boston and Hartford.
But in older times, such as in the 1700's and 1800's, the South was primarily driven by agriculture, while New England was driven by industry, and eventually the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century.
