The ability to identify yourself with your audience is commonly call "Find Common Ground".  When you point out that you and the audience have similar experiences means that you have had the same reactions, feelings or desires as they have. When you and the audience come from the same place you can talk about things that they know such as traditions, language, slang etc. and finally if you have similar value you can easily persuade someone to trust what you are saying.
