Joy walked 1/3 units (miles? kilometers? it doesn't matter actually) in 3 of the 5 days. So, walking 1/3 units for three days tallies up to

\dfrac{1}{3}\cdot 3 = 1

If we add the day when she walked 1/2 units and the day she walked 2/3 units, we get

1+\dfrac{1}{2}+\dfrac{2}{3} = \dfrac{6+3+4}{6} = \dfrac{13}{6}
