Hello! Char here!

Answer:

Historical questions to ask yourself while you are reading:

1. What is going on during the time period of your book? (war, drought, excess of money, prejudices, political unrest, etc.)

The Bussey Bridge Train Disaster is going on during this time.

2. How does that element affect the plot, setting, and characters of your book?

This does not affect the plot in this novel.

3. Why did the author use this time period?

The author uses this time period because segregation was going on during this time.

AFTER you have finished reading, use your graphic organizer to answer these eight questions.

1. What is the human rights issue in my novel?

The human rights issue in this novel is sexism because men are more important in this novel.

2. Where does this issue first come up in my novel?

This first comes up when the men are talking and they start saying that women are too much and they need to be put in their place.

3. Where in my novel does this issue become most important?

This issue becomes most important when Janie misplaces the bill and Joe starts yelling and they argue back and forth. "You sho loves to tell me whut to do, but Ah can't tell you"...."Dat's 'cause you need tellin' It would be pitiful if Ah didn't. Somebody got to think for women.... I god, they sho don't think none theirselves." "Ah knows uh few things, and womenfolks thinks sometimes too!" "Aw naw they don't. They just think they's thinkin'. When Ah see one thing Ah understands ten. You see ten things and don't understand one."(Hurston 71)

4. How is this issue presented in my book?

This is presented because the men don't let the women speak and the men insult them on their appearance and sexuality. If women show male characteristics, they are "unattractive." The men beat their wives to show dominance. "“It takes money tuh feed pretty women. Dye gits uh lavish uh talk.”(Hurston 36) “Not lak mine. Dey loves to hear me talk because dey can’t understand it. Mah co-talkin’ is too deep. Too much love co to it.”(Hurston 36) “You don’t believe me, do yuh? You don’t know de women Ah kin git to mah command.” (Hurston 36)

5. In my novel, who suffers due to the human rights issue?

Janie suffers because she is getting effected by this because of how her husbands treat her.

6. What does the wording in my quotations from the Character Graphic Organizer imply?

This implies that the quotes have to do with the human rights issue and that they give examples of how they are human rights issues.

7. When this issue becomes most important, what happens?

Eventually Joe wins because he wants to feel powerful and then their bed is no longer a place for fun, it is only for sleeping. They start to fight more and Janie starts to question their marriage.

8. How is this issue resolved in my novel?

Joe dies and she marries Tea Cake. When the hurricane happens, she has to shoot Tea Cake because he was attacking her and she finally has peace and she can be free and be herself.

Explanation:

The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes is a novel written by Suzanne Collins. It is a backstory of the President of Panem, Coriolanus Snow.

The situation above happened when Coriolanus Snow entered the truck with the tributes in order to accompany Lucy Gray to the quarters. The truck was enclosed with metal bars and this confined the tributes inside. Upon reaching their destination, they were dumped down on a chute into a cold cement. Coriolanus thought that they were at the stables, but later on, he found out that they were in a monkey house at a zoo.
