These declining illnesses cause the general loss of mental abilities such as memory, language, and lifelong thinking that can interfere with a person's normal activities and relationships. People with dementia can become confused, unable to remember things or lose skills they once had, including everyday tasks.

The main signs and symptoms of dementia are the gradual and progressive loss of memory, mental confusion, loss of ability to solve problems, agitated behavior or hallucinations, loss of recognition of familiar places and loss of interest and inability to perform usual activities.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. People with Alzheimer's lose neurons (nerve cells) that act in areas of the brain responsible for knowledge and memory. There is also the deposition of abnormal substances in some brain cells.
