When contour lines are far apart it means that there is a gentle slope.

Explanation:

The contour lines are essential element in cartography, as they are one of the best methods for representation of the relief, be it its forms or elevation. The contour lines basically represent closed circular lines that are connecting dots with the same elevation. When applied, the contour lines, with the markings of their elevation, the contour interval, and their shape and closeness, give good representation as to what kind of relief is on the topographic map.

When the contour lines are far apart, that means that the slopes are gentle. When the contour lines are close to each other, that means that the slopes are steep. If the contour line is replaced with small directed lines, that means that there is a cliff. If the contour lines are lacking, than it means that the area is flat, most probably a plain or a plateau.

There are several types of and variations of contour lines and additional helping elements, such as:

  • contour lines (full lines)
  • main contour lines (usually every fifth one, and being marked with number)
  • half contour lines (interrupted lines)
  • quarter contour lines (dots)
  • black dot with number (representing a top)
  • small directed lines (representing a cliff)
