Bernard and Lenina cross the Atlantic and go to a hotel near the reservation. Bernard warns her that the reservation lacks any sort of games or amusements, and that she might be bored. She quotes her hypnopaedic learning: "progress is lovely." She insists on coming with him. They both go to the warden of the reservation where they receive an introduction to the "savages" that live there. They learn how the savages remain in an older way of life where they bear children naturally, speak various languages, and obey religious principles. When they get there Lenina is horrified by the dirt, sights and smells.

Read the passage from "By the Waters of Babylon.”
Arturiano [62]

Answer: The following two lines depict the setting of the passage in the best possible way.

It is a great Dead Place—greater than any Dead Place we know.

Everywhere there are the ruins of the high towers of the gods.

Explanation: The given passage describes the circumstances after a highly catastrophic event. The line ' It is a great Dead Place—greater than any Dead Place we know' conveys the fact that the land is devoid of any human presence. At the same time, the line ' Everywhere there are the ruins of the high towers of the gods' describes that the narrator is surrounded by ruins of mighty architectural structures.

Thus, both the sentences appropriately convey the circumstances of complete disintegration of human civilization in the post-apocalyptic world.

valina [46]

After reading the sentences, we can tell we are supposed to use the words in parentheses to form phrases that will complete the blank spaces. We can do it in the following manner:

 1. My brother was on his own when the accident happened.
 2. I gave up on reading the book after the first three chapter because it was so boring.
 3. The heat made it impossible for me to get on with my work.

This question requires knowledge about collocations.

What are collocations?

 • Collocations are words that are often used together in order to convey meaning. Their joint usage is so common that we say they sound good and natural together.
 • Let's use number 1 above as an example. We must use the word "own" to fill in the blank. We also know that we should say something implying that the brother was alone.
 • The best option is to say he was on his own when the accident happened. "To be on one's own" means to be alone, and it is a common phrase (collocation) to use and express such meaning.
