Answer:

In the early Middle Ages, people lived by a social system known as feudalism. Within this system, people received protection from invaders in exchange for their loyalty and obedience. At the top of the system was the King,  who gave land to nobles in exchange for knights to fight in his wars. The serfs were at the bottom. They paid taxes in exchange for protection.

Explanation:

Feudalism was an economic, political, social and cultural organization based on land tenure, which predominated in Western Europe during the Middle Ages.

Society in feudalism was called a status society because it was composed of social strata. There was no social mobility, that is, moving from one social group to another was practically impossible.  Feudal society was based on the existence of three social estates - nobility, clergy and serfs.

At the top of the social hierarchy was the king, who concentrated little political power, which was divided between him and the feudal lords.

Work in feudal society was based on serfdom. Workers were trapped on land and subordinated to a series of obligations ranging from taxes and services. The life of the serfs was miserable in every way and they occupied the bottom of the social hierarchy.
