After World War I, the world was beyond shocked and overall shook up due to it. People were questioning the point of life in general, and so surrealism came into play, and Dali led the movement. Though, I digress. As people are shook up, they're looking for new leadership, and very firm and powerful. This then gave megalomaniacs the ability to take control of a government, giving the people a firm and powerful government that they desired, which came in the form of totalitarianism. For an example, Benito Mussolini took control over Italy, persuading the Italian people that his leadership was best and that they will get everything they want from him. For another example, Adolf Hitler took control of Germany, promising that he will take vengeance for the Treaty of Versailles, which punished the Germans in an excessively harsh manner.
