Between the period of 1800 to 1860 the citizenship rights of African Americans largely stayed the same in the United States. It was not until the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment was the institution of slavery changed drastically and African Americans increased their rights as citizens rather than slaves.
