Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun was inspired by Stephane Mallarme's poem "The Afternoon of a Faun". The symphony was intended to serve as an illustration and homage to the poem. Interestingly, Stephane Mallarme did not like the idea of his poem converted to a symphony, believing that his poetry was "music enough".
