When the rock is broken down into pieces called sediments, , these sediments settle through the process of sedimentation. If enough sediment accumulates, it eventually forms a sedimentary rock. If the same rock eventually is subjected to immense heat and pressure, the process of metamorphism can occur, which turns it into a metamorphic rock.
