That's because Franklin started an extremely formal education at one of the most noble and important institutions of higher education in the country - Boston Latin School. Our academic life does not have so much formality and discipline, although it establishes rules.
However, the main difference can be seen by the fact that Franklin left this institution and promoted his academic knowledge through his own experiences. We don't do that and we need to be within the academic environment to be able to build most of our knowledge.
