Clay ran for presidential elections for five unsuccessful times.

Clay has received a lot of criticism for his elaborate schemes and pacifying politics.

He played an important role in the Compromise of 1850 with an intention to resolve the status of slavery. Clay tried to create a balance between free and slave states of Missouri and Maine respectively. The solution was not ideal rather a pacifying attempt. Hence, he earned the title of "The Great Compromiser"
