O Muse, of the man of many devices, who wandered full many ways after he had sacked the sacred citadel of Troy. Many were the men whose cities he saw and whose mind he learned, aye, and many the woes he suffered in his heart upon the sea, seeking to win his own life and the return of his comrades. Yet even so he saved not his comrades, though he desired it sore, for through their own blind folly they perished—fools, who devoured the kine of Helios Hyperion; but he took from them the day of their returning. Of these things, goddess, daughter of Zeus, beginning where thou wilt, tell thou even unto us."

2. Write the thesis statement for your argument using the combined counterclaim / claim pattern you learned.
Paraphin [41]

Answer and Explanation:

Being an athlete on a university team is an activity that requires a lot of dedication and effort, for this reason, many people believe that university athletes should be paid so that they can dedicate themselves fully to the sport and do not need to look for secondary jobs that would decrease this dedication. However, other people believe that having the opportunity to play on the university team is already the greatest privilege that these athletes are having and that paying them would not be fair to other students who also promote important activities within the university.

Faced with the choice between Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus must make a choice. He chooses Scylla and he knows this means that
rodikova [14]

The poem reads:

But as I sent them on toward Scylla, I

told them nothing, as they could do nothing.

They would have dropped their oars again, in panic,

to roll for cover under the decking. Circe's

bidding against arms had slipped my mind,

so I tied on my cuirass and took up

two heavy spears, then made my way along

to the foredeck – thinking to see her first from there,

the monster of the grey rock, harboring

torment for my friends.

—The Odyssey,

Homer

According to Homer, it is definitely a strength the best word to describe Odysseus is "cuirass". A cuirass is a type of defensive armor. Odysseus here has to be psychologically and emotionally armored for what is about to happen: the gruesome death of some of his sailor friends at the hands of Scylla, the mythical monster dwelling on the Strait of Messina.

The poet is clearly conveying the message that the sacrifice of a few is inevitable and necessary for the saving of the entire ship and crew. These men were his friends and he send them to death to save the majority of his friends. This is a very difficult decision and it takes a great deal of moral fortitude to face it.
