Why was James Buchanan an appealing presidential candidate to most people?

History

Answer:

Hailing from some populous state as a longtime member of Congress and an envoy to Russia and England, Buchanan had many attractive political assets. In essence, Buchanan gave the delegates the kind of hope that seemed in short supply during the tumultuous mid-1850s. A smooth, pleasantly dull conservative, he upset few people. Above all, Buchanan was from the North, yet he maintained ideological ties to the South—a "doughface" in the slang of the day. Buchanan forces quietly told the Douglas men that cooperation from the "Little Giant" would enhance his chances for 1860, and Douglas withdrew from the race. "Old Buck" got more ballots than any other candidate in the first round, and he clinched the Democratic nomination with the requisite two-thirds majority on the seventeenth ballot, an easy victory during that bitter era. John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky received the party's vice presidential nod.

What aspects of romanesque architecture caused early scholars to call it roman-like?
Novosadov [1.4K]

Romanesque architecture is obsessed in semi-circular arches, massive walls, barrel wall roofs (barrel vault) and decorative arcades (succession or arches on a walkway). It is markedly different from Gothic architecture, which is characterized by use of pointed arches. If you are thinking about fairy-tale castles and stuff, you are probably looking at some elements of that architecture. Romanesque architecture flourished approximately 6th to 11th centuries, and it is widely adopted by castles, monasteries, and churches. It got its name probably because of the arches, which is a feature typical in Ancient Roman architecture. Actually, the word Romanesque was coined in the 18th century.

How did literacy test laws affect politics in the south after civil war ?
antoniya [11.8K]

Answer:

I would say they allowed states to avoid enforcing the fifteenth amendment

Explanation:

The 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." Although ratified on February 3, 1870, the promise of the 15th Amendment would not be fully realized for almost a century. Through the use of poll taxes, literacy tests and other means, Southern states were able to effectively disenfranchise African Americans. It would take the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 before the majority of African Americans in the South were registered to vote.

__________ supported the Enlightenment idea that people are naturally selfish
iren [92.7K]

Answer:

Thomas Hobbes.

Explanation:

The primary significant figure in the English Enlightenment was the political philosopher Thomas Hobbes, who started his occupation as an instructor but branched out to philosophy about the age of thirty. In Leviathan, Hobbes develops on the creation of man and supports the absolutist control. Because of Hobbes' realistic aspect of human nature, he thought the only kind of administration effective adequately to operate humanity's evil thoughts in line was an independent sovereignty, where a king exercised highest and unchecked authority over his nationals.
