The following sentences reflect the common theme of soldiers' reluctance to talk about their war experiences:

B)It was a difficult moment, but I did what seemed right, which was to say, "Of course not". and then to take her onto my lap and hold her for a while. In this sentence it is clear that the narrator does not feel comfortable with the question he has just been asked, and so he chooses to lie to her so that he can avoid going deep in the question he was asked.

E)They would discuss their experiences right up to the time of battle and then suddenly they wouldn't talk anymore. In this sentence the author shows how unwilling the soldiers are to talk about war and how they can go from talking about the battle to suddenly not talking anymore, as if they are blocking the memories away.

I think that the sentences that portray a common theme of reluctance of soldier in telling their war stories would be letters B, E, and F. Letter B's statement gave it away with the word 'difficult'. Letter E's idea was concretely evident in the phrase 'suddenly they wouldn't talk anymore', and Letter F seems like it talks about why soldier's don't talk much about their experiences.

You were recently on a school trip when something unusual happened.
const2013 [10]

Answer:

Dear Sam,

Mrs. Anna's class and I were going to the local zoo when something unusual happened. We had just gotten done eating some food at the café and some girls wanted to go look at the dusk monkeys. Anyways, we're all looking at monkeys when we see a tiger. Well, yes its a zoo you see animals all the time. But this Bengal tiger was out of its cage. It also had a chicken in its mouth. This Bengal Tiger was also loose. Everyone in the class including Mrs. Anna started freaking out because they thought the tiger was going to eat them too or something. A few minutes later, zoo keepers came by and shot the tiger with a tranquillizer and hauled it back to its cage. Apparently a section of the cage had a space big enough for Cassie the tiger to get out. We're all safe now!

How does the author use irony to develop the theme of the poem? Cite evidence from the text to support your response.
astra-53 [7]

In poetry and literature, irony is used as a rhetorical or literary technique to elaborate on what something appears to be on the surface in contrast to what it actually is. In the text, situational irony is used when the traveller speaks of the king's words engraved on the pedestal. Ozymandias, the king, is proud of his amazing works and of all he constructed in his lifetime, believing that would make him mighty for all time. However, nothing remains around the pedestal; the desert's sands have engulfed all of his colossal works. Therefore, it is the contradiction between what is boasted (that is, the amazing constructions) versus what is actually there (a large stretch of sand and decay) that constitutes the irony in the passage.

Which lines in the poem are examples of sensory imagery?
Nataly [62]

Imagery refers to the mental images and figures that writers create in the mind of their readers. By using specific vocabulary and literary techniques, writers can create certain images in readers' minds. Sensory imagery, therefore, refers to the use of specific words that connect the readers' senses (touch, smell, sight, hearing and taste) with the ideas developed in the writers' work in order to create a mood, idea or theme in their minds.

In this poem "To Cecilia" (written by Ben Jonson in 1616) we can appreciate some examples of these sensory imagery:

In this poem, the writer is contemplating and admiring the woman's beauty and, in the first paragraph, we can observe that the use of the word "eyes" in the first line make us think that the writer is looking at her, contemplating her beauty. In this case, he connects the readers' sight with such idea.

As another example of sensory imagery, in "Or leave a kiss but in the cup And I'll not look for wine", the writer is trying to connect his/her feelings to kiss the woman with the taste of wine. The writer is trying to connect his/her desire to taste her kiss and he/she successes in connecting that idea with one of the readers' sense: taste.

The last example that can be identified in the poem is at the end. The writers talks about the rosy wreath that he/she has sent to his/her loved one and how she has sent it back to the writer. But the writer talks about its smell. By doing so, the writer tries to connect that smell of the rosy wreath with the readers' own sense, that is, the sense of smell.
