The answer is Europeans.  The Swahili Coast was known for being a place where trade flourished.  Inhabitants from now modern day countries such as Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania engaged in trading with Europeans.  Goods and raw materials were exchanged in this area which lead to various influences in culture.
