They are alike by being kind and brave, not judging people on the outside and always being considerate.

How are they different? Well:

Jack was friends with some of the coolest kids in school, and when he saw August the first time he was conflicted with popularity and kindness.

August didn't go to school for almost 10 years, so he's extremely socially awkward unlike Jack. And instead of having lots of friends, he was often bullied for how he looks, and has been extremely lonely.
