Henry fourth of France issued the edict of Nantes in 598 for granting the protestants (Huguenots) equal rights with the Catholics. It was meant for ending the long running wars of religion. The edict helped in restoring internal unity and peace . Henry himself was a protestant and later converted for becoming the king. Protestantism was declared illegal in 1685 by Louis Sixteenth. It led to the migration of the protestants to Germany, Dutch Republic and Britain. These migrants became enemy of the Old France.
