Answer:

"Lincoln's dilemma

With no hope of bringing the South back into the United States by protecting slavery, Lincoln had a new dilemma. His own political party, the Republicans, had formed around their opposition to slavery. Many of the more radical politicians in the party saw the secession of the South as the best opportunity to abolish slavery once and for all. As the US war dead piled up, more and more Northerners began to push Lincoln to punish the states that had seceded by making abolition a major goal of the war.

The problem with abolishing slavery, however, was that there were still four slave states that had not seceded from the United States: Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware. Lincoln feared that if he advocated emancipation he would provoke those states into joining the Confederacy, making the war even more difficult to win. Of the border states, Maryland was particularly worrisome, because the US capital at Washington D.C. sat on its border with Virginia. If Maryland decided to join the Confederacy, Washington D.C. would be completely surrounded by enemy territory."

Consider the last 3 stanzas of the poem. What effect does this conclusion produce in the overall poem?
marysya [2.9K]

Answer and explanation:

The final stanzas of the poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T. S. Eliot bring a sad and hard conclusion to the poem. The poem as a whole is a pessimistic one. The speaker, Prufrock, is an unsatisfied man both carnally and spiritually. He is a loner, incapable of establishing relationships and connections with other human beings. He does want and wish for it. But even in his imagination, women despise him and criticize the way he looks and acts. He clearly has a self-esteem issue that, instead of being addressed and treated, only grew worse with time. Now it completely prevents him from living a normal life.

The conclusion of the poem is even more pessimistic. The speaker does not believe he will ever be happy. He compares women and the happiness they represent to mermaids. As we know, in Greek mythology, mermaids would sing to sailors with the purpose of enchanting them. Sailors who heard their song would end up drowning. Prufrock thinks he will drown as well, but when reality wakes him up from the mermaid's dream. The mermaids, after all, do not sing for him. He watches himself growing older, stranger, weaker, more coward and less desirable.

How much control does an individual have over his/her “success” in life?
anzhelika [568]

Explanation:

It differs for each individual, what success is referred to. For some, the success is forming a family and being happy, while for others it's having the job of their dreams. Each individual does have control over their success, but not in every aspect. If they're after being successful, they have to work hard, not give up, stick to their standards and always remain focused on the goal. Although there are less aspects where the individual isn't in control of their succes, such as decease and general economic availability, they can also effect the rate of their success.

Write an article for publication in a national newspaper on the causes of teenage pregnancy
Nadya [2.5K]

Answer:

This study used linkable administrative databases housed at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP). The original cohort consisted of 17,115 women born in Manitoba between April 1, 1979 and March 31, 1994, who stayed in the province until at least their 20th birthday, had at least one older sister, and had no missing values on key variables. Propensity score matching (1:2) was used to create balanced cohorts for two conditional logistic regression models; one examining the impact of an older sister’s teenage pregnancy and the other analyzing the effect of the mother’s teenage childbearing.
