By 'author of the essay reading Shakespeare' do you mean us readers?
As, I'm currently doing right try and read classical novels like 'How to kill a mockingbird'. There's no need to rush if it's the first time reading, the more you read (or few of classicals) you will kind off get what the author is making the character speaking. Also understanding the aspect of the story. :)

I have found this question online. Every single sentence provided has the following options:

a. analyzing

b. evaluating

c. advising

d. supporting

e. empathizing

Answer:

"Wow, it sounds like you had a busy day." → e. empathizing

"I think you should go and talk to him about it." → c. advising

"I think she is behaving like that because she isn't feeling well." → a. analyzing

"That's a good point." → b. evaluating

"I remember when you had a similar situation, you did great." → d. supporting

Explanation:

There are several ways to respond when listening to someone speak. The first sentence above shows a response based on empathy, that is, on the ability of understanding what the other person is feeling.

The second sentence provides the interlocutor with a piece of advice, the speaker's opinion on what the other should do.

The third sentence shows an example of analysis, an attempt to consider different perspectives and variables concerning the situation.

The fourth sentence is an evaluation, that is, the speaker's thoughts concerning something. In this case, it is a positive or favorable evaluation.

Finally, the last sentence is an example of support, more specifically a compliment that can make the other feel seen and valued.
