Trench warfare was a gruesome reality of World War I that let to a host of problems for both sides of the conflict. The strategy consisted in a establishing a front line comprised of fortified trenches that were impossible for the enemy to cross. The stalemate ensued when neither of the armies on the Western Front were able to advance because of the difficulty of breaking the well-developed trench system of the opposing side.
