As Europeans established their colonies, their societies became divided along religious and racial boundaries. In colonials, there were three main social classes, including the gentry, the middle class, and the poor. The highest based on the gentry who were wealthy merchants, ministers, planters, royal officials and lawyers. Middle-class society consists of small planters, farmers, and artisans.
