Containment was the policy pursued by the US govt. to stop the spread of communism in Asia and Europe. It represented a middle ground between the Detente and Rollback policies. It was used to refer to the geological containment of the Soviet Union and was in response to the increasing  Soviet influence in Asia and Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America

President Obama blamed the court's inability to issue a ruling on Republican senators who have declined to hold a confirmation hearing on his Supreme Court nominee Judge Merrick Garland.[2]
