There are 3 foreshadows. Each one is progressively worse than the one before it.

  1. When the older brother actually does leave. That seems both harmless and natural enough. Older brothers leave all the time.
  2. When Aunt Nicey says read birds dying is bad luck. This is much more serious. Her pronouncement could be superstition (of course it is), but it is serious. Does a dead red bird foreshadow anything or not?
  3. The last one is the death of the Scarlet Ibis. Can we ignore that. Likely not. The Scarlet Ibis = Doodle
