At this time, many newspapers posted that the USS Maine (a US naval ship) was sunk by the Spanish military of the coast of Cuba. Even though the reporters had no proof, they ran the story anyways. This caused American citizens to hate the Spanish and resulted in citizens urging the government to declare war against Spain.

The government did go to war, resulting in the US gaining control of territories like Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. All of this started due to a yellow journalist writing a sensational and distorted headline.
