Before Muhammad started to have the revelations and focus on preaching the word of God/Allah, he did had a profession. His profession was a merchant. He was a good merchant from what is known, and he had a good training for this profession since early age. Muhammad was active as a merchant in the eastern Mediterranean region in general which was an excellent location for gaining wealth. During his merchant days, he managed to get in contact with lot of Christians, and that influenced him a lot, later influencing his life and the lives of millions of people in a way that he probably didn't even dream of.
