The novel "The Outsiders" by Susan Eloise Hinton is a story of coming of age of a group of youngsters, coming from rival gangs. The "greasers' of which the Curtis brothers are a part of are rivals with "the Socs" but attend the same school so have to encounter each other often.

The characters of Daryll and Sodapop are the older brothers of Ponyboy Curtis, the protagonist and main narrator of the whole story. They are also described to be extremely handsome brothers.

Steve Randall, who is Ponyboy's best friend is described as tall and lean, also cocky.

Dallas Winston, as a juvenile delinquent, had numerous run ins with the law and had to go to the police often.

Johnny, also Ponyboy's best friend, is the youngest of the Greasers' gang, becoming the pet of the gang. He is also extremely shy and quiet.
