Babas relationship with amir goes back and forth. sometimes, Baba is very hard on amir which makes amir feel unloved and hated. However, during some parts of the novel, baba displays unusual affection towards amir. Before the kite flying competition, baba tells amir, "i think maybe you'll win the tournament this year. what do you think?" (hosseini, 56)
