Gandhi.  Gandhi was killed while he was at the Birla House on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse who shot Gandhi three times in the chest.  Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahabhasa.  Godse and his co-conspirators were later arrested and put on trial.  One of the conspirators Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was acquitted.  The trial lasted .eight months Godse and another accomplice Narayan Apte were sentenced to death.  The others were given life sentences but Dattatraya Sadashiv Parachure was also acquitted.</span>
