In the Middle Ages there was a close connection between the King, the rulers in general, and the Church. This is because the rulers unselfishly helped the Church as a dogmatic conviction and belief, and thus influenced the subjects and people, that enabled the rulers to govern more easily because they considered themselves to be chosen by God. On the other hand, they received a blessing from the Church for their enthronement, and the ceremony of crowning was performed by the Church. Practically, the rulers and the Church ruled together.
