The satellite states tried to break away from the Soviet Union. 2,500 people, Hungarian and Soviets died during the invasion. Many Hungarian had were left as refugees as the war continues to rage on. There were mass arresst and denunciations occur. It was only then in January 1857, when a new government rose and stopped public opposition
