Jan becomes emotionally attracted to Chris, while Alex loves Jan. Chris and Bob are in a secret relationship (don't judge) that they want no one to realize. After Jan confesses to Chris and is rejected, Jan spends the next 2 years of her life investigating Chris, eventually coming to the conclusion that Bob is Chris' sweetheart (again, don't judge).
