The Cuban Missile crisis was when the Soviets and Cuban military/government(Under Fidel Castro) decided to put Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. The Soviet missiles could not reach the United States from the Soviet Union. The United States however, had nuclear missiles in Turkey. JFK had set up Cuban Exiles to retake the island by giving them military training and setting them up with unmarked American bombers/fighter planes. During the day of the attack, American air support had been pulled back and the invasion was a complete disaster. This invasion was called the ‘Bay of Pigs Invasion’. After this humiliating defeat for the United States, JFK bought the freedom of the Cubans that were captured during the invasion for $52m, Soviets agreed to take missiles out of Cuba if US to missiles out of turkey.
