He was restless with routines. When he knew all there was to know about a job he simply moved on. That made wonderful background for the details in Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. One thing that he did work at consistently is his jobs on the Mississippi and his jobs in journalism.

As a reader, the only thing I can conclude after reading this excerpt is that Mr. Chiu is frequently distracted by concerns for his own health. As this part of the story goes, I didn't see warm feelings between the couple, or the happiness they share due to their honeymoon. The only stressed thing in this excerpt is the main character's state of health and how he feels relieved because the honeymoon comes to an end.
