In the US it refers to court precedent. In other words, previous decisions which have been established in courts built upon laws which have already been written and codified.
In the UK, common law refers to the commonly accepted law of the land. -That is, things which were commonly accepted as a crime before those laws were written down or made into Statutory Law.
