That's true. A simile compares things with like or as while a metaphor does not. An example would be something like "Her eyes <em>were the sea</em> and I was drowning." (hey that's actually pretty good I just made that up lol) If it was a similie it would say "Her eyes <em>were like the sea</em>" or "Her eyes <em>were as blue as the sea</em>"

In a speech about valley fever, a potentially deadly disease that has reached serious proportions in several southwestern states
amm1812

Answer:

extended example

Explanation:

The supporting material used is an extended example. An extended example uses a narrative or anecdote to tell a story to better illustrate the point the speaker is trying to make. In this support, the speaker is telling a story about Lori Crown and her experience with valley fever. The purpose of this extended example is to show how harmful valley fever can be as well as demonstrate it's prevalence in southwestern states. Not only does this story show the ill effects of valley fever, it also demonstrates how costly it is to fight it.

Which sentences in this excerpt from Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Contest" suggest that the author’s tone is mocking?
kondaur [170]
I would say the last sentence shows mockery the best: "Many a singer far better than this absurd fop had been driven amid execration and abuse from the platform." However, there might be others as well, such as: "The low note was a grunting, a rumble, the deep discordant growling of an ill-conditioned dog."
